Why heritage-language reading matters

The most fragile part of a heritage language is not the grammar or the vocabulary — it is the ordinary reading ritual. A parent reads a bedtime book in English because that is what the bookstore stocks, and after enough bedtimes the child never quite makes the leap into their grandparents' language. Two generations later, the language is only used at family gatherings, and one generation after that, it is gone. The research is quite consistent on this: home literacy in the heritage language, not classroom instruction, is what keeps it alive.

The Heritage Pack was built for this exact problem. Ten books, each one a real personalized story starring your child, rendered side-by-side in English and one of nine heritage languages including Spanish, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, Korean, and Tagalog. Every translation is written by a native-speaker editor — not machine-translated and stitched — and every translated edition is reviewed by an educator who reads books to children in that language every day.

The reader mode shows both languages on the same spread so the child can bounce between them naturally. Audio narration is recorded by a native speaker; the parent can slow the playback to any speed, so a beginning reader can follow along without missing a word. Credits never expire — you can use the pack over a summer, a school year, or across multiple grandchildren.

Grandparents buy this pack most often as a gift. In our experience the second-most-common buyer is a bilingual parent whose child is starting to prefer English — the pack becomes a way to bring the heritage language back into the bedtime routine without a fight. The gift flow emails the recipient a magic link so no one has to share passwords or set up an account before opening a book.

Which languages are included?

Currently: Spanish, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, Korean, and Tagalog. Each language has a native-speaker editor and clinician reviewer. Languages marked 'Recommended' passed our linguistic QA at ≥ 95% over the last 30 days.

Do the credits expire?

No. Once purchased, the ten book credits sit on your account (or the recipient's account for gift purchases) with no expiration. Use them across months, years, or multiple children — whatever suits your family.

How does the gift flow work?

Choose the Heritage Pack you want to give, enter the recipient's email, add an optional message, and check out. The recipient receives an email with a magic claim link — no account required beforehand. The credits land on their account the moment they click.

Can I switch languages later?

The Heritage Pack is issued in one language at purchase. If you want a second language, purchase a second pack — this ensures each pack ships with the correct native-speaker editorial workflow.

What ages is it built for?

Ages 2 through 10. The interior layout, vocabulary, and pacing automatically adjust to the age you set on the child's profile so a three-year-old sees short sentences and a nine-year-old sees richer prose.
